Snow: ‘All options’ open on Wolfowitz
WASHINGTON, May 15 (UPI) — The Bush administration said in Washington Tuesday it would consider “all options” about World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz’s future.

“At some point in the future, there are going to be conversations about the proper stewardship of the World Bank,” White House spokesman Tony Snow said. At that point, “all options are on the table.”

“The fact is that he made mistakes,” Snow said of Wolfowitz’s helping to arrange for girlfriend Shaha Ali Riza, a longtime bank employee, to get a pay raise, promotion and transfer to the U.S. State Department shortly after he assumed the World Bank presidency in June 2005.

But Snow said Wolfowitz’s mistakes were “not, in our view, firing offenses,” The New York Times reported.

A 52-page report from a bank board committee said Wolfowitz had broken ethics rules in dictating the terms of his girlfriend’s compensation.

The former U.S. deputy defense secretary has fought to keep his job and appeared before the bank’s 24-member board late Tuesday to explain his actions, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The board will debate his future, with a vote expected to follow soon. Bank officials said the board had cleared its Wednesday schedule to stay focused on the matter.
